Have a question?
We have the answers.
Plant Factory is a proven concept, but it’s also new to many people. This is a revolution in the way that fresh food will be supplied and consumed in Australia, and with change comes many questions. Please see some of the common questions answered below.
At Plant Factory, we're redefining sustainable agriculture, going beyond traditional organic standards. While not certified organic, our farming practices meet and even surpass the quality of organic produce. Our indoor vertical farming system, free from pesticides and prioritising non-GMO crops, ensures the highest safety and quality. We uniquely combine organic and conventional fertilisers in our advanced hydroponic system for optimal growth, though this approach doesn't fit conventional organic certification. Our commitment to "Purity in Every Leaf" reflects our dedication to producing greens of superior quality, taste, and sustainability. We encourage you to discover more about our nutrition and farming methods, and we are ready to answer any questions you might have.
Hydroponics
What does hydroponic mean?
It is the art of growing plants using only water, nutrients, and a growing medium. Hydroponic is derived from the Greek words:
- 'hydro', meaning water; and
- The ponics also has a Greek root, ponein, “to labor or toil.”
In simple terms it means a method of cultivating plants without soil.
Can plants grow without soil?
Yes – Plants need water and nutrients that historically are stored within the soil. A good hydroponics system provides the exact amounts of water and nutrients the plants need, and exactly when they need it. The water and nutrient solution is then filtered and recirculated. Using no soil means precise control over the level of nutrients all the roots receive.
Can all plant grow hydroponically?
Leafy greens and most herbs are perfect for almost any hydroponic system.
Vining crops like tomatoes, and peppers grow well with hydroponics but take up more space and may require trellising.
Most root vegetables aren’t ideal for hydroponics as there are more efficient processes that lead to better results and more efficient use of resources.
What is a vertical farm?
A vertical farm grows crops using soil-free farming techniques such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics in vertically stacked layers. Crops are grown on top of each other rather than in traditional horizontal rows, which allows for a smaller footprint.
Why grow produce in urban area?
By growing food in urban areas, consumers can source fresher, more recently harvested food from a clearly identifiable “farm” source. The greens are sold fresh, immediately after harvest and thus last longer reducing food waste. Growing closer to consumers also produces “low food miles” reducing cost, CO2 emissions and the need for refrigerated storage.
What are the benefits of hydroponic vertical farming?
- Uses up to 95% less water
- Precise control over what level of nutrients all the roots receive.
- Pest free
- Pesticide and herbicide free
- Non-seansonal growing
- Enables growing close to consumers resulting in "low food miles" reducing cost, CO2 emissions and the need for refrigerated storage Greater freshness
Where can I find Plant Factory locations?
Plant Factory has operated a proof-of-concept site in Collingwood and has secured its first production site in suburban Melbourne. Operations will commence from April 2023 and further sites will be rolled out nationally.
Is this a new technology?
Vertical agricultural “farms” and the technology behind them, is a worldwide phenomenon with vertical farming established in countries such as USA, Japan, Singapore, Italy and Brazil. By the end of this year, the value of the vertical farming industry globally is predicted to be close to $US6 billion growing to US13.2 billion by 2027.

Living Greens
Is hydroponic food safe?
Hydroponically grown food is completely safe for consumption.
In fact, Plant Factory uses less pesticides and less herbicides due to plants being raised are raised in a controlled and clean environment.
Do hydroponically grown plants taste different?
